Macbook Air | Lenovo X300

There’s been an increasing number of news articles about a new Lenovo laptop, the X300. Supposedly this new ultra mobile notebook is comparable to the recently released Apple Macbook Air. Some have even gone as far as to say that the X300 kills the Macbook Air in specs. Don’t know about that so I thought I’d do do some brief investigative work first. Here are my condensed conclusions.

The X300 looks like any of the other Lenovo Thinkpads; black, dull and boring. Though it’s noticeably thinner, it’s still slightly thicker than the Apple Macbook Air. Apple’s new “Air” just screams sexy and makes people drool over it. Just Google an image up and you’ll see that the Air doesn’t look like any other laptop out there on the market. Apple’s always done well in this area.

Other than that, I think the technical specs go to the X300. I mean sure they share some similar components. Same 13.3 LED display. Both have solid state flash drives (ssd) which are cool but expensive because they’re still relatively new and they have no moving parts so there’s less noise and less chance that it’ll go down. But I think for myself, I’d still like to have an optical drive. The X300 has one but the Macbook Air doesn’t. Yea… and I need my USB ports. X300 has three while the Air has one. Throw in better battery life, higher screen resolution, WiMax connectivity, TouchPoint/TouchPad, and better cpu and I don’t know how I can still practically go with the Air. I mean both are thin and light coming in at 3lbs. each, but come on. With that many additional features on the X300, how can you not pick it? And they’re roughly the same price, depending on certain configurations of course. About $2600-$3000.

Guess when it comes down to it, some people will still pick appearance over functionality. You really can’t argue with that. You’ve also got your different OS groups. It just boils down to preference. Not to say that I wouldn’t take a Macbook Air if it were really cheap or free. Hehe.
